December 2015 Updates

December saw the SG portfolio increase by 4.73%. This month saw a flurry of activities. I consolidated the positions on the ones that I wanna keep and sold those that I feel weren't worth keeping any more. Decided not to track my US portfolio anymore as they are bought using my joint account with wife and not my personal account, so I will track those separately.

November Updates

November saw the SG portfolio dip by 1.90%. This is primarily due to the oil prices nose diving. USA production of Shale gas is cutting their reliance on oil imports. No signs of recovery so far, OPEC has refused to cut production to prop up oil prices. We shall see how long this will last.

October Updates

October has been a roller coaster month. With the protesting in Hong Kong continuing, Ebola spreading in the US, falling oil prices and the Feds ending QE, the market has fallen sharply. However, it also presents a chance for us to pick up discounted stocks. :) Hence, I have nibbled Sembcorp, OUE Ltd and IBM (US). IBM's stock price plunged to a three-year low recently after their CEO dropped the earnings forecast for 2015 (five-year plan to boost profit). However, I am confident that IBM has an experienced management team to turn the business around. It also boosts confidence that Warren Buffet is their biggest share holder. It is also my first foray into the US market since the gobal financial crisis period. The SG portfolio size has increased 32% this month due to the additional purchases. It also helps that the market rebounded in the last 2 weeks of October.

A short update on Sheng Siong, in my previous post they were not doing that well. Since then Sheng Siong Group has announced their third-quarter net profit which is 15.4 per cent higher to $12.2 million. Their stock price recovered to $0.670 per share after this announcement.

October's activities:

  1. 21 Oct 2014 - Added 2 lots of OUE Ltd
  2. 24 Oct 2014 - Added 1 lot of Sembcorp Industries
  3. 29 Oct 2014 - Added 1 lot of IBM

Dividend Announcements:

  1. Soilbuild (20 Nov 2014) - $61.84
  2. IBM (10 Dec 2014) - USD 11
  3. Aims Amp (23 Dec 2014) - $27.70

September Updates

September is not a good month for the portfolio. Given the issues of the Fed's discussion of raising interest rates and the very recent Hong Kong protests; the STI and other stocks have taken a quite a beating. The portfolio value stayed at a positive growth rate (2.50%) because of the additional funds from the purchase of 2 lots of Sheng Siong.

I have also decided to take profits from M1 and invest the proceeds into Sheng Siong to boost my holdings with them. However, Sheng Siong have not been doing well lately ever since the announcement of issuing 120 million new shares at $0.67 each. The current price ($0.665) now is even lower than that of the placement shares.

The portfolio now have 6 stocks remaining. As the market had taken a beating, I have been looking at a few stocks to purchase, but am torn between injecting fresh funds to the portfolio and saving up a war chest for more opportunities should the market tank further. Will continue to monitor the market and decide October's move later.

September's activities:

10 Sep 2014
Added 2 lots of Sheng Siong

22 Sep 2014
Divested M1 and used the proceeds to add 5 lots of Sheng Siong taking total holdings to 15 lots.

August Updates + OCBC 360 Account

If you compare the Market Value from last month and Market Value of my portfolio this month, there would be a decrease of -1.7%. This drop is attributed to realizing the losses from NOL. :(

I went to OCBC bank to sign up for the much touted OCBC 360 account promising 3.05% per annum  (up to 50K SGD of deposit) if 3 categories are fulfilled. That would be $1,525 worth of interest per annum! I have already deposit 10K into this account. Going to slowly fill it up to 50K soon. :)

Dividend Payout for this month:
M1 - $70
Starhub - $50
Sheng Siong - $60
Total = $180

Divest NOL

Today I've divested from NOL after almost 2 years. I've made a loss of 1K and have vested the proceeds into Sheng Siong to increase my holdings with them.

There are some lessons I've learnt from holding NOL (applies to me but may not be applicable to other people):

  • Never invest in an industry that I do not understand well.
  • Never buy stocks that do not give dividends.
  • Never hold on to a stock for too long, hoping that it will rebound if I have better opportunities to generate returns elsewhere.
  • There are more people in forums interested in discussing about a stock that is not doing well than those that are doing well and gives good dividend yield.
